Census Safety SOP: Ensuring Security for Odisha Officials

The Odisha government has issued a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure the safety and security of officials involved in census activities following recent attacks against them. At least four officials were assaulted during their duties, prompting the state government to take swift action to protect its workers.

The SOP advises census workers to wear official ID cards, carry appointment letters, and avoid working during peak heat hours to prevent heat-related illnesses. Provisions include working in teams in isolated areas and immediate disengagement in case of hostility. Police coordination is emphasized to mitigate threats, and strict legal actions are to be taken against offenders.

Officials are urged to synchronize with local police and community leaders to gain support during field duties. Breaching census operations may lead to fines or imprisonment under the Census Act. The SOP aims to facilitate the smooth completion of the census tasks scheduled for April 2026.
