The Government of Himachal Pradesh has unveiled plans for the 2027 Census, marking a digital era for this critical demographic exercise. The process will commence in two phases starting mid-2026, as detailed in an official announcement from the General Administration Department.

The first phase, running from June 16 to July 15, 2026, will involve House Listing and Housing Census. Residents can self-enumerate online during a 15-day pre-census period. This phase aims to gather comprehensive data on housing conditions, amenities, and ownership.

The second phase in February 2027 will focus on Population Enumeration, with earlier activities scheduled for snow-bound regions in September 2026. The government warns of penalties, including fines and imprisonment, under the Census Act 1948 for those obstructing officials or falsifying data. Exemptions exist for certain cultural customs. Privacy is emphasized, with data remaining confidential. Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta highlighted its importance for governance and socio-economic planning.
