Union Minister George Kurian announced progress by state governments in implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in line with constitutional guidelines. Kurian made this statement during a seminar by the National Commission for Minorities discussing the Jain community's contributions to India’s economy, education, and philanthropy.
He underscored the government's support for further enhancing the community's role in national development. The seminar also saw participation from Madhya Pradesh's Minister Chaitanya Kumar Kashyap and NCM secretary Alka Upadhyay.
Notably, Uttarakhand has already enforced UCC, with Gujarat recently passing the UCC Bill. The Chhattisgarh cabinet is moving towards UCC by forming a committee to draft the code. These initiatives focus on unifying legal standards for marriage, divorce, and inheritance, thereby promoting religious and gender equality.
