An animal rights activist has raised concerns over the conditions in which cattle are kept at a market in Perumbavoor, Kerala. Angels Nair has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) alleging severe cruelty toward these animals, which are reportedly kept inhumanely tethered and exposed to extreme heat without sufficient water and shelter.
The PIL highlights that municipal cattle markets, such as the one in Perumbavoor, often operate without following either the advisory guidelines issued by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying or the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017. The plea emphasizes that these cattle are subjected to unnecessary suffering even if they are destined for slaughter.
In response to these allegations, the petition seeks urgent intervention from the Kerala High Court to halt the illegal operations of such markets, urging for improved welfare and humane treatment of animals across the state.
