In a striking turn of events, the proposed Constitutional amendment for 33% women's reservation in Indian legislatures failed to secure the necessary votes in Parliament. Odisha's Biju Janata Dal (BJD) saw this as a win against the controversial Delimitation Bill.
The bill received 298 supporting votes but fell short of the required two-thirds majority, while 230 MPs opposed it. BJD President Naveen Patnaik advocated for separating the Women's Reservation Bill from the Delimitation Bill, seeing this defeat as a triumph for Odisha.
Amidst the fallout, BJD leaders criticized the BJP, which had attempted to align with party interests over state representation. Despite the setback, opposition voices highlighted continued support for female representation and emphasized the ongoing fight for gender equality in politics.
