CNews Under Fire: Allegations of Racism and Cyberbullying
French news channel CNews faces investigation for hate speech following alleged racist remarks about Bally Bagayoko, the first Black mayor of Saint-Denis. Media critics accuse CNews of promoting far-right narratives. The case highlights racial tensions and challenges in French media and politics.
The Paris prosecutor's office announced on Friday the initiation of an investigation into alleged hate speech by French news channel CNews. The case involves suspected racist remarks concerning Bally Bagayoko, the newly elected Black mayor of the Parisian suburb Saint-Denis.
CNews, owned by tycoon Vincent Bolloré's Vivendi group, faces criticism for its contentious opinion-driven format. Comparisons to Fox News are common, as critics allege the channel's focus on immigration and security topics amplifies far-right sentiments. Bagayoko, a figurehead in the diverse and economically challenged suburb north of Paris, filed a complaint citing racist comments made on air on March 27-28.
Amid these allegations, an investigation into cyberbullying against the mayor, affiliated with the France Unbowed party, is also underway. Under French legislation, racial slurs can lead to fines up to 45,000 euros and a year in jail, with cyberbullying penalties reaching two years' imprisonment and a 30,000-euro fine.
