A 20-year-old woman from Odisha's Ganjam district has died after setting herself on fire, police revealed on Thursday. The incident occurred a day after she lodged a rape complaint against a 21-year-old man.
She initially received treatment at a local hospital before being transferred to the MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, where she succumbed to her injuries after five days. Doctors reported that she had sustained over 60 percent burn injuries.
The accused, identified as a priest, had been in a relationship with the victim since 2022. He was arrested on March 29 on rape charges, and following the woman's death, additional charges of abetment to suicide have been filed.
