The Kollam Additional District and Sessions Court on Tuesday convicted G Sandeep for the murder of Dr Vandana Das in a sensational case that shook Kerala in May 2023. Public prosecutor Sicin G Mundakkal affirmed the conviction, addressing brutal charges including murder and destruction of evidence.
The court also found Sandeep guilty under the Kerala Healthcare Service Persons and Healthcare Service Institutions Act of 2012, which guards against violence in medical settings. Despite the defense's argument claiming Sandeep's mental instability, the court rejected his insanity plea based on concrete evidence presented by the prosecution.
Sandeep, a school teacher, attacked Dr Das with surgical scissors at Kottarakkara taluk hospital after assaulting police officers and a private individual. Dr Das, a promising young doctor, succumbed to her injuries, heightening public outcry. The sentencing is scheduled for March 19.
