Tensions Mount: Iran's New Supreme Leader Demands Israeli and U.S. Concessions
Iran's new supreme leader has rejected peace proposals, demanding concessions from Israel and the U.S. after Israel claims to have killed Iran’s security chief. The ongoing conflict has closed the Strait of Hormuz and sparked global economic concerns, while both sides continue their military offensives.
Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Israel announced on Tuesday that its forces had killed key Iranian security officials, including Iran’s security chief, Ali Larijani. This comes as Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's new supreme leader, dismissed peace proposals from intermediaries, demanding Israel and the United States make significant concessions first.
The conflict has entered its third week, resulting in at least 2,000 deaths, with military actions intensifying. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks, notably impacting oil export operations in the Gulf region, while the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed off, exacerbating global economic anxieties.
Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s plea for military support to reopen the vital waterway, international allies remain hesitant. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions to avoid crisis in energy and food supplies due to the disrupted shipping routes through the Strait.
