The Enforcement Directorate has urged the Tamil Nadu Police to register an FIR over an alleged recruitment scam in the state's Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department. It is alleged that bribes ranging from Rs 25-35 lakh per candidate were collected from up to 2,500 candidates.
The federal agency claims to have evidence, including documents and WhatsApp messages, that expose the involvement of public servants and politicians. This evidence has been shared with the state's director general of police as part of their request to register an FIR under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The alleged bribery and use of the hawala network for money transfers were uncovered during a separate CBI-led bank fraud investigation. The ED has demanded further investigation into the recruitment process, which reportedly includes corruption in exam administration to select candidates for the department in the financial years 2024-25 and 2025-26.
