A 69-year-old pilgrim from Gujarat, Dilip Bhai Mannu Mali, died of cardiac arrest while in Kedarnath, sparking controversy over delayed posthumous logistics. Despite assurances, his body remained stranded for over five hours before a free airlift was arranged by local authorities.
According to Hemant Bhai Mali, Dilip's son, no transport assistance was provided promptly despite repeated requests. As a result, the family had to pay Rs 53,000 for a private ambulance from Rudraprayag to their home in Vadodara.
The district administration denied negligence, citing a temporary suspension of helicopter services due to safety protocols. However, officials maintained quick decision-making was prioritized once operations resumed. This incident underscores the need for improved emergency response protocols, despite existing Standard Operating Procedures.
