The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has implemented a significant regulation concerning the use of Ashwagandha in food products. According to the latest advisory, food businesses are required to use only the roots and their extracts, explicitly banning the use of leaves in any form.
The regulation targets manufacturers of health supplements, nutraceuticals, and other dietary products, ensuring they comply with the permitted use of Ashwagandha. The advisory highlights a growing concern over some manufacturers incorporating Ashwagandha leaves contrary to guidelines.
In alignment with the FSSAI, the Ayush Ministry has also directed product manufacturers to adhere strictly to these regulations. The state food safety commissioners have been instructed to maintain vigilance and ensure the updated regulations are followed by all stakeholders.
