The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a stern directive to food commissioners to ramp up inspections in fruit markets and godowns. The aim is to clamp down on the use of banned artificial ripening agents such as calcium carbide.
FSSAI's push follows reports of food business operators utilizing calcium carbide and ethephon solutions for ripening fruits, including mangoes and bananas. These substances present significant health hazards, including difficulties swallowing and skin ulcers.
To combat this malpractice, FSSAI has urged strict enforcement and an increase in vigilance within fruit distribution channels. They have advised the use of strip paper tests for detecting acetylene, a byproduct of illegal ripening, to ensure consumer safety.
