AIIMS-Delhi has reported an unprecedented spike in eye injuries caused by carbide guns during Diwali celebrations, prompting experts to call for a complete ban on these chemical firecrackers.
Doctors at AIIMS' Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences noted a significant increase in firecracker-induced eye injuries, with 190 cases this year compared to 160 last year.
The emergence of carbide guns, makeshift devices using PVC pipe and calcium carbide, has led to severe eye injuries, especially among children. Experts emphasize the urgent need for regulatory measures and public awareness to curb this dangerous trend.
