In a tragic incident off the Libyan coast, at least 18 migrants perished when their boat capsized, with over 90 survivors rescued near Tripoli. The Red Crescent's Sabratha branch spearheaded the rescue efforts after receiving a report late Monday.
Bodies were retrieved from shores close to Surman's port and volunteers were seen placing them into white plastic bags before handing them over to ambulances. Meanwhile, first aid was administered to survivors in the aftermath of the incident.
The disaster highlights the perilous Mediterranean crossing faced by migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in hopes of reaching Europe. Libya remains a pivotal transit point in this migration, a situation exacerbated since Muammar Gaddafi's fall in 2011.
