In a major departure from his earlier ambiguous remarks, U.S. President Donald Trump has openly acknowledged that he is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term in office. Speaking aboard Air Force One en route to South Korea, Trump admitted, 'If you read it, it’s pretty clear — I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad,' effectively putting to rest any further speculation about a third presidential bid.

The constitutional barrier stems from the 22nd Amendment, which prohibits any individual from being elected to the presidency more than twice. Despite public musings and merchandise promoting a 2028 run, Trump’s latest statement suggests a recognition of the legal roadblocks. 'It’s been a great run,' remarked U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, reflecting on discussions with Trump about an amendment, an option deemed electorally unfeasible due to its extensive legislative requirements.

Trump’s potential candidacy in 2028 is currently untenable, despite allies like Steve Bannon challenging the two-term limit. Instead, Trump has hinted at other Republican prospects, naming Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential successors. If a third run were attempted, Trump would be 82, the oldest in U.S. history, underscoring the obstacles ahead.
