In a disturbing development, police have detained a medical representative from Sresan Pharma, the company behind the allegedly deadly Coldrif syrup suspected of causing multiple child fatalities in Madhya Pradesh. This arrest followed the deaths of 24 children due to suspected toxic effects of the cough syrup.
The Tamil Nadu government has taken stringent measures against Sresan Pharma, revoking its manufacturing license and shutting down operations after the adulterated product was linked to these tragedies. Since then, six individuals, including the company's owner G Ranganathan and prescriber Dr. Praveen Soni, have been apprehended.
The tragedy, resulting in the death of dozens of young children, has prompted the World Health Organisation (WHO) to alert the public about the dangers of substandard cough syrups in India. Investigations revealed alarming levels of diethylene glycol in the Coldrif syrup, significantly exceeding safety limits.
