A new global power analysis highlights a record increase in solar energy, particularly in China and India, leading to clean energy surpassing global electricity demand in 2025. The report by energy think tank Ember states that last year's clean power generation outpaced global electricity demand by 33.8%.
Solar power, which saw a 30% growth in 2025, met most of the new electricity demand, while the use of fossil fuels declined for the first time in major contributors like China and India. This shift marks a significant milestone as renewables—solar, wind, and hydropower—make up more than one-third of the world's electricity mix.
The analysis underscores the ongoing transition from fossil fuels, despite global challenges such as political tensions and war-related disruptions. Experts highlight the importance of leveraging clean energy for both economic and national security benefits, urging a continued shift away from fossil fuel dependency.
