The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) staged a protest at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) office on Monday, pressing the Telangana government to resolve the longstanding issues faced by GHMC contract workers. A large contingent of workers and union representatives voiced concerns over stagnant wages, inadequate benefits, and poor working conditions.

Narsimha, President of the GHMC Contract Workers Union, stated that approximately 50,000 contract workers are employed under GHMC, alleging minimal wage growth over recent years. He demanded the implementation of a minimum wage of Rs 26,000 to tackle soaring essential commodity prices.

Speaking to ANI, he said, "Nearly 50,000 contract workers are employed by GHMC. Although wages saw an increment in 2020, with an additional Rs 1000 raised in 2023, no change has been made for four years. In light of rising essential prices, we insist on a minimum Rs 26,000 wage. Additionally, workers should receive 23 leaves and bonus entitlements according to the Contract Labour Act." Meanwhile, the opposition alleges GHMC of irregularities in its tendering processes.

On April 10, Telangana Jagruthi founder K Kavitha accused GHMC of major irregularities, claiming projects worth Rs 1,118 crore were awarded through nomination, bypassing proper procedures. Kavitha calls for the Chief Minister's immediate action to establish transparency and accountability in municipal operations. (ANI)
