Rising Mercury: Brace for Record Heatwaves Across India

In a pressing warning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an unprecedented increase in heatwave days this year, predominantly affecting the Indo-Gangetic plains, coastal states in the east, and regions in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and adjacent areas.

Speaking to PTI Videos, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra highlighted the need for preparedness, as temperatures in certain regions could surpass 40 degrees Celsius. He emphasized the IMD's efforts to reach vulnerable populations by circulating critical information through WhatsApp groups, display boards, and the Common Alert Protocol.

Mohapatra noted that despite significant advancements in alert systems, there's a continuous need to innovate traditional methods to ensure that all sectors, including those lacking modern telecommunications access, receive timely heatwave warnings. The IMD continues to refine its forecasts, offering detailed outlooks one season in advance and daily district-level warnings.
