BJP MP Tejasvi Surya's controversial statement likening the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh to the 1947 partition of India has triggered protests by Congress workers in Telangana. The protests were led by State Youth Congress President Jakkidi Shiva Charan Reddy, who criticized Surya for insulting the state's longstanding fight for statehood.
Participants rallied at the Congress's Telangana headquarters, burning an effigy of Surya and demanding an apology. They asserted that Surya's remarks undermined the sacrifices made during the 60-year struggle for Telangana's separate statehood. Concurrent demonstrations took place at the Martyrs Memorial, a historic site of significance to the movement.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar defended Surya, accusing Congress of hypocrisy and recalling Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's past critiques of Sonia Gandhi. Amid criticisms, Surya maintained respect for Telangana martyrs and ascribed historical betrayal to Congress, particularly during the 2014 bifurcation by the UPA government.
