India reinforced its growing stature as a key player in global maritime security during its participation in the World Border Security Congress 2026, held in Vienna, Austria from April 14 to 16.

A high-level three-member Indian delegation, led by Additional Director General Anand Prakash Badola, represented the country at the prestigious international forum, presenting India's evolving best practices in safeguarding maritime boundaries and strengthening coastal security architecture.

Global Platform for Border Security Collaboration

The World Border Security Congress, established in 2012, is regarded as one of the world's leading platforms for dialogue on border management. It brings together senior policymakers, security agencies, technology experts, and industry leaders to address emerging challenges, explore technological innovations, and promote international cooperation.

India's participation in the 2026 edition comes at a time when maritime security is gaining increasing importance amid rising geopolitical tensions, transnational threats, and the need for secure trade routes.

At the forum, the Indian delegation showcased a comprehensive approach to maritime security, highlighting:

  • Strengthened coastal surveillance systems

  • Multi-agency coordination mechanisms

  • Use of advanced technologies for monitoring and response

  • Integration of intelligence and operational frameworks

Officials emphasised India's focus on building a robust, resilient, and technology-driven maritime governance system, capable of addressing both traditional and emerging threats.

Addressing Emerging Maritime Challenges

Discussions at the Congress focused on key global concerns such as:

  • Illegal trafficking and smuggling

  • Protection of critical sea lanes and trade routes

India shared its experiences in tackling these challenges through coordinated action, capacity building, and strategic partnerships.

Reinforcing Commitment to International Cooperation

The delegation engaged with international counterparts to:

  • Exchange best practices

  • Explore technological collaborations

  • Strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation

Strategic Importance of Maritime Security

With over 90% of India's trade by volume moving through sea routes, maritime security remains a critical pillar of national security and economic stability. India's expanding role in forums like the World Border Security Congress reflects its intent to contribute actively to global security governance.

Looking Ahead

As maritime threats become more complex and interconnected, India's emphasis on technology, coordination, and international engagement positions it as a responsible and proactive stakeholder in global security.

The participation at the Vienna Congress not only highlighted India's operational capabilities but also reaffirmed its commitment to secure seas, safe trade, and stronger international partnerships.
