In a landmark decision that has reverberated across Karnataka's political landscape, a Bengaluru special court delivered a life sentence to Congress MLA and former minister Vinay Kulkarni for his role in the high-profile 2016 murder of BJP leader Yogesh Gowda. The Special Court of People's Representatives ruled decisively against Kulkarni and 15 others involved in the case.

Assistant Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), made a compelling case for rigorous punishment, labeling the murder as "extremely heinous" and a direct affront to the integrity of the judicial system. Raju emphasized the accused's attempt to manipulate evidence, urging the court to impose strict life sentences to deter such crimes in the future.

The defense, however, petitioned for reduced sentences, arguing that the accused had familial responsibilities meriting leniency. Nevertheless, the court dismissed these pleas, affirming life imprisonment as the appropriate penalty. The trial's outcome marks a significant moment in Karnataka's legal and political arenas, with Kulkarni denying the CBI's allegations of personal and political motives behind the crime.
