Italy's Nuclear Power Reconsideration: A Step Towards Energy Independence?

In a renewed call for energy independence, the head of the International Energy Agency has urged Italy to reevaluate its stance on nuclear energy. Italy, which currently has no nuclear reactors, imports a significant portion of its energy, including nuclear-generated electricity from neighboring countries like France.

Nuclear power has been banned in Italy since referendums in 1987 and 2011. However, the government is drafting regulations to potentially lift this ban and embrace new nuclear technologies. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol expressed his viewpoint that Italy should consider nuclear energy for economic prosperity, energy security, and national sovereignty.

The Italian government has prepared a new legal framework for nuclear energy, awaiting parliamentary approval. The move reflects a broader global trend to minimize reliance on oil and gas due to geopolitical tensions. Nonetheless, public opinion remains divided, with anti-nuclear advocates highlighting safety and financial concerns.
