Tamil Nadu's Financial Vision: A Bold Interim Budget Amid Federal Challenges

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu unveiled a substantial Rs 2.55 lakh crore interim budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, focusing heavily on education and urban development. A significant Rs 4,000 crore is dedicated to the DMK's free bus travel scheme for women, a flagship initiative in the state.

The Interim Budget sets revenue receipts at Rs 3,44,575 crore, with the state's own revenues accounting for 74.67%. Despite a challenging financial relationship with the central government, Tamil Nadu aims for a Fiscal Deficit of 3.00% of GSDP.

Additionally, the budget underscores improvements in transport infrastructure, with urgent requests for Metro projects in Coimbatore and Madurai amidst withheld funds and center-imposed conditions. The government's financial strategy aims to propel Tamil Nadu's growth beyond national averages despite these obstacles.
