BJP MP Dinesh Sharma has supported the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, calling it a critical move towards ensuring transparency and impartiality in Indian elections. In a statement to ANI, Sharma underscored the importance of accurate voter lists, citing issues with deceased individuals and infiltrators casting votes. He emphasized that a transparent voter list is essential for fair elections.
Sharma noted that those opposing the SIR are perceived as opposing electoral transparency, claiming that it threatens those who manipulate votes and those who enable infiltrators, such as Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, to participate illegally. He insisted that only those averse to transparent elections are resisting this initiative.
The SIR's initial phase was implemented in Bihar as a precursor to the State Assembly elections. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced the second phase will cover regions including Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, and others. The process involves printing, training, and enumeration over several months, culminating in the publication of the Final Electoral Rolls in February 2026.
