Mumbai's Bandra region awoke to a thick blanket of smog on Wednesday morning, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 300, categorized as 'Poor' according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Meanwhile, Delhi has intensified its campaign against rising pollution levels by enforcing Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) starting Sunday, as reported by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).
Amid Diwali festivities, Delhi's air quality remained entrenched in the 'poor' category with AQI levels consistently between 201-300. The CPCB reported an AQI of 296 at 4 PM on Sunday. The CAQM has directed that actions under Stage I & II of GRAP be executed comprehensively across the National Capital Region (NCR) to halt further degradation. All responsible agencies are mandated to monitor, review, and implement measures rigorously while citizens are urged to follow the GRAP Stage I & II guidelines.
In efforts to manage the pollution, the commission instructed related agencies to adhere to timelines prescribed in their robust anti-pollution strategy for NCR, focusing significantly on dust control. Key measures include routine water spraying and dust suppressant usage on key roads, enhancing vehicle parking fees to deter private vehicle use, synchronizing traffic lights, and keeping the public informed via media. The Air Quality Index categories defined by CPCB range from 'good' to 'severe', with Delhi and Mumbai currently falling within 'poor'.
