In response to soaring temperatures, the Odisha government has instructed district collectors to initiate morning classes across schools with immediate effect. The directive comes as temperatures in parts of the state touched 40 degrees Celsius, prompting authorities to reschedule class timings.
The School and Mass Education Department stated that schools, including government, aided, and private institutions, will operate from 6.30 am to 10.30 am until the summer vacation begins. Post-break, institutions will revert to normal hours. This new schedule will be implemented annually based on prevailing weather conditions, with collectors having the discretion to adjust timings as required.
To alleviate heatwave effects, schools are directed to maintain suitable drinking water facilities and repair tube wells. Additionally, daily 'water break' timings will be observed, and outdoor student activities restricted. The department has urged parents to ensure children carry water bottles and for schools to educate pupils on heatwave safety measures.
