Rebels linked to the Islamic State group unleashed a brutal attack in eastern Congo, resulting in the deaths of at least 43 people, according to local officials on Thursday.
The perpetrators, members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), stormed Bafwakoa village on Wednesday night, wreaking havoc by setting homes ablaze. Local authorities report the death toll may be as high as 56, with several individuals still missing and two reportedly taken hostage.
Congo's military faces immense challenges in curbing the ADF's influence as the group continues its campaign of violence, predominantly targeting civilians instead of engaging in direct confrontation with military forces. The ADF's presence and impact in the region have escalated in recent years, especially near the Uganda border and towards eastern Congo's main city, Goma.
