In a significant boost to the dairy sector, milk-producing farmers in the state are now reaping unprecedented benefits, with monthly earnings averaging Rs 34.18 crore. This surge results from the state milk federation's procurement of approximately 2.70 lakh litres of milk daily, a remarkable increase from previous figures.
The federation's initiative of doorstep collection is particularly aiding marginal milk producers in remote areas, hence improving their socio-economic state through direct financial assistance. The government has consistently upped milk procurement prices, with the 2026-27 budget slated to procure cow milk at Rs 61 per litre and buffalo milk at Rs 71.
Reforms in the dairy sector have spurred participation in village dairy societies, boosting numbers from 27,498 to 39,790. This includes promoting milk producer groups and women self-help associations, fostering sustainable livelihoods. A new milk processing plant in Dhagwar, Kangra, and a partnership with the National Dairy Development Board aim to enhance milk processing and marketing, empowering farmers economically.
