Defying predictions of protest, 20-year-old Mariia Seniuk, a Russian-born athlete, excelled in the women's singles short programme at the Milano-Cortina Games, securing her spot in the free skate.
Seniuk, who shifted from Russia to represent Israel in 2019, acknowledged receiving mixed reactions. Despite this, she relished the supportive ambiance, noting, "I'm skating for Israel and some of the people don't support, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere today."
Support among the audience included a U.S. couple bearing Israeli flags, while pro-Palestinian sentiments led to a staff removal by organizers. Fellow supporter, Mia Drazin, expressed surprise at the warm reception and lack of hostility.
