Banorte's Digital Overhaul: Racing Towards Cashless Football
Banorte is transforming payment systems at Mexico’s premier football stadium, aiming for a cashless experience just months before a major event. Despite some technical setbacks, such as Wi-Fi issues during test matches, the bank is implementing solutions to ensure seamless transactions for the upcoming influx of nearly 90,000 fans.
Banorte is swiftly advancing towards a cashless future for football fans at Mexico’s leading stadium, preparing for an event hosting nearly 90,000 attendees. The bank is introducing an entirely digital payment system, though recent test events revealed some initial technical glitches.
Despite the stadium still being under construction, the initiative is in full swing as Banorte distributes portable card readers. However, Wi-Fi disruptions have led to some transaction delays, causing frustration among vendors and fans. CEO Marcos Ramirez acknowledged these issues as typical pre-launch challenges.
To resolve such concerns, Banorte, alongside stadium operators, has opted to isolate the payment network from public Wi-Fi to minimize disruptions from heavy matchday traffic. Continuous work on the stadium is expected to ensure it is ready for its official handover to FIFA, maintaining only minor pending renovations.
