Nuwan Thushara, a prominent fast bowler from Sri Lanka, has initiated legal action against Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in the Colombo District Court. The lawsuit challenges SLC's decision to deny Thushara a no-objection certificate (NOC), a requirement to participate in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Thushara, who is a member of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad, maintains that his contract with the board expired on March 31, 2026, rendering the NOC requirement unreasonable and a restriction on his ability to earn a living, per ESPNcricinfo reports.
Thushara has named key figures in the SLC including its president Shammi Silva, treasurer Sujeewa Godaliyadda, secretary Bandula Dissanayake, and CEO Ashley de Silva, as the defendants. The case is scheduled for further consideration on April 9 after the Easter court recess. According to Thushara, the SLC cited newly implemented fitness criteria as the basis for denying his NOC, standards he allegedly failed to meet. These criteria encompass a 2 km run, 20 m sprint, agility tests, and specific physical measurements. Thushara contends these requirements were not previously associated with NOC issuance, highlighting past clearances under similar conditions.
International Cricket Council (ICC) guidelines necessitate that players secure an NOC from their home boards to play in international leagues, leaving the criteria for such permissions entirely within the purview of national boards. This autonomy has led to debates, particularly involving players like Thushara, whose central contracts have concluded. The ongoing legal case could sideline Thushara from the IPL, which began on March 28, for multiple weeks. Despite being acquired for Rs 1.60 crore in the 2025 auction, Thushara featured in just one match for RCB last season, taking a single wicket. The pacer had anticipated making his return from injury during the 2026 IPL season.
