Amid political pressure, Italy's soccer federation president, Gabriele Gravina, resigned on Thursday following the Azzurri's failure to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time. Gravina's resignation is expected to result in the dismissal of coach Gennaro Gattuso, as calls for new leadership grow louder.

Italy's Sports Minister, Andrea Abodi, highlighted the need for sweeping changes in the Italian soccer leadership after consecutive World Cup disappointments under Gravina's tenure. Italy's current struggles hark back to early exits in the 2010 and 2014 tournaments, but the Azzurri's recent failure came after a penalty shootout loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Gabriele Gravina, who held the position since 2018, oversaw Italy's European Championship victory in 2021. With an election set for June 22, Italian soccer's new leadership must also focus on readying the nation's stadiums for co-hosting Euro 2032 with Turkey. Gravina's role at UEFA remains under contemplation.
