A man was arrested in connection with a racially aggravated offence at the Tyne-Wear derby between Sunderland and Newcastle United. The incident stopped the game for three minutes. Both clubs condemned the abuse, and the investigation is ongoing with the man released on bail.
A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in a racially aggravated offence during the Tyne-Wear derby, according to Northumbria Police. Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida was targeted with racial abuse at Newcastle United's stadium during the Premier League match.
The clash, which took place on March 22 and saw Sunderland triumph 2-1, was halted for three minutes during the second half following reports of racist abuse from the stands. Both Sunderland and Newcastle United strongly condemned the incident, reaffirming their support for Geertruida.
The arrested man, hailing from Gateshead, was taken into custody on Tuesday and subsequently released on police bail pending further investigations. Detective Inspector Phil Guard emphasized that racial abuse has no place in football or any community.
