In a historic showdown at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, Team India shattered records by defeating New Zealand to clinch the T20 World Cup 2026 with a commanding 96-run victory. This triumph marks India as the first team to secure the T20 World Cup title on home ground, achieve consecutive championship victories, and win the trophy for the third time in its history. Their prior victories were in 2007 and 2024.
US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, conveyed his congratulations to the Indian team via an X post, celebrating their formidable success. Previously, Gor had witnessed the India vs USA match in the tournament and highlighted the promising trajectory of cricket in the United States. He lauded the efforts of the ICC and its chairman, Jay Shah, describing the event as an extraordinary spectacle and predicting a prosperous future for cricket, including its presence in upcoming Olympics.
The final was a spectacle of prowess, with New Zealand electing to bowl first. However, India took charge with Abhishek Sharma's explosive 52 off just 21 balls, anchoring the team alongside Samson and Ishan Kishan to surpass the 200-run threshold by the 16th over. The match recorded a total of 255/5, the highest in T20 World Cup final history. New Zealand, stifled by India's aggressive bowling, ended their chase at 159, despite a valiant effort by Tim Seifert. Indian bowlers Axar and Bumrah played pivotal roles in dismantling the Kiwi lineup, securing a landslide victory and etching another chapter in cricketing history.
