Shreyas Iyer, a key middle-order batsman for Team India, has been hospitalized at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney after suffering an "impact injury" to his left lower rib cage during the third ODI against Australia. The injury occurred while he was executing an impressive diving catch that eventually revealed a laceration to his spleen.
Iyer's significant contribution, including the dismissal of Alex Carey, came at a high personal cost as he awkwardly landed on his ribs and elbows. Post-catch, he was seen in considerable pain and was promptly taken to the pavilion by medical staff. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Monday that Iyer is receiving medical care following the incident.
The BCCI stated that Iyer is "medically stable" and that scans have identified a spleen laceration. His condition is being closely monitored by the BCCI Medical Team in collaboration with specialists from Sydney and India. Iyer, who showcased his batting prowess in the series with scores including a 77-ball 61, could potentially miss the upcoming home ODIs against South Africa, pending his recovery.
