A second-string Indian team, comprising many junior athletes, is set to uphold the nation's athletic supremacy at the South Asian Senior Athletics Championships, which makes a grand return after a 15-year hiatus.
The fourth installment, held at the Birsa Munda Stadium under the South Asian Athletics Federation's banner, revives the regional event last hosted in Kochi, 2008. It's the third time India plays the host, following the inaugural edition in 1997. Pakistan is notably absent, although invited.
Involving 206 athletes from six regional nations, the event offers exposure to India's junior athletes. With 73 participants, India lacks star power but fields emerging talents, competing fiercely, notably against Sri Lanka's strong contingent led by javelin standout Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage.
