The Thane Municipal Corporation has enacted a temporary ban on vehicle washing at service centers across the city, effective until June 10, due to decreasing water levels exacerbated by the rising mercury, officials reported on Wednesday.
Urgent appeals have been made by Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar and Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, urging citizens to practice water conservation to avert a looming shortage. According to an official release, the water levels in dams and groundwater resources have been on the decline due to intense heat.
As a conservation strategy, the Municipal Corporation has temporarily outlawed the washing and cleaning of vehicles at service stations and has threatened punitive action against violators under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act. Commercial entities have been advised to curtail unnecessary water usage, adopt water recycling methods, and strictly comply with water-saving norms, while residents are prompted to minimize water wastage in daily activities.
