The Delhi government's Pink Saheli Smart Card initiative has surpassed expectations, with 5.3 lakh women adopting this free bus travel offer to date. Launched on March 2 by President Droupadi Murmu, the initiative makes travel accessible for women and transgender persons, enhancing participation in public transport and promoting self-reliance.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the scheme's role in providing a secure digital identity and dignified travel experience, stating it mirrors the growing confidence of women in the capital. The card, part of the 'One Nation, One Card' program, operates on a 'tap-and-go' basis, simplifying access to diverse transit systems without the need for paper tickets.
Officials highlight not only the convenience and safety the card brings but also its contribution to economic relief and societal development. By improving transport data management, the system has enhanced service delivery, offering greater opportunities in education, employment, and progressive independence for Delhi's women.
