China has imposed a ban on poultry imports from Chile due to a recent outbreak of bird flu in the South American nation, according to a statement from the Chinese customs authority.
The ban, which takes immediate effect, encompasses all poultry and related products from Chile. This decision underscores China's commitment to safeguarding its livestock industry and maintaining biosecurity standards. As part of these measures, the customs agency stated that any unauthorized Chilean poultry products discovered at the border will be destroyed.
Notably, China had previously suspended poultry exports from Chile because of bird flu, with trade only resuming in late 2024 after an 18-month hiatus. Before this interruption, China was a major market for Chilean poultry, accounting for 15% of its poultry exports in 2022.
