The Odisha government has imposed a two-month ban on fishing along its 484-km coastline starting from April 15, a move aimed at facilitating the unhindered breeding of fish species. This annul practice is expected to impact the livelihoods of countless local fisherfolk as their activities are temporarily curtailed.
The Joint Director of the state Fisheries Department, Rabi Narayan Patnaik, emphasized that this restriction, effective till June 14, is in the larger interest of the fisherfolk, ensuring a higher yield post-ban. Over 6,000 mechanized fishing vessels, including 1,726 trawlers, are prohibited from entering the sea during this period as per legal stipulations.
Implemented under the Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act and following directives from the Union government, the ban carries heavy penalties for violations. Officials will strictly enforce the rules, including potential confiscation of fishing crafts, to protect the marine ecosystem while promising future benefits to the fishing community.
