In an effort to boost the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) networks across urban areas, the Indian government has called on states and urban local bodies (ULBs) to expedite approvals and develop time-bound plans. This move comes amid the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has heightened the urgency for energy security.

Convened during a joint review meeting chaired by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Srinivas Katikithala and Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary Neeraj Mittal, directives were given to over 110 identified geographic areas. Spread across more than 190 districts and 300 urban authorities, these areas are to prepare three-week action plans with targeted timelines for project execution and approval processes.

The emphasis is on prioritizing high-demand zones such as group housing societies to quickly utilize nearly 30 lakh pending household connections while also aligning with central gas supply guidelines. ULBs are encouraged to relax procedural norms to facilitate faster execution and were directed to set up dedicated quick response teams for effective day-to-day monitoring and coordination.
