In a notable setback to the Central Vista redevelopment, around 43% of transplanted trees have perished, according to data revealed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. This statistic is part of a wider statement made by Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu.
The Union Minister disclosed that out of 3,609 trees moved as part of the Central Vista project, a concerning 1,545 have died. These activities were scattered across notable sites, including the NTPC Eco Park and areas along the Yamuna river bank.
With rising afforestation expenditures reaching Rs 370.30 lakh in 2025-26, the government is under pressure to justify the environmental trade-offs of its Central Vista vision. Major components such as the new Parliament have been completed, despite environmental challenges.
