Catastrophe on the Slopes: Avalanche Strikes Ski Group Near Lake Tahoe

In a harsh reminder of nature's unpredictability, an avalanche near Lake Tahoe left ten skiers missing and stranded six others. The catastrophe occurred on a backcountry slope in California's Sierra Nevada mountains on Tuesday as heavy snow blanketed the region.

The avalanche struck the Castle Peak area near Truckee, enveloping a group of 16 skiers, including four guides and 12 clients. Six skiers survived and awaited rescue, while the fate of ten others remains uncertain. Should all missing individuals be found deceased, this event would rank among the deadliest avalanches recorded in the United States.

Rescue efforts continue under treacherous conditions, as a winter storm warning remains in effect. Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed ongoing coordination between state and local teams to expedite search and rescue operations.
