The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 27. This development follows an active Northeast monsoon season, which has already brought significant precipitation to Tamil Nadu over the past few days.
According to the IMD, the low-pressure system, stationary over the southeast Bay of Bengal, is forecast to move west-northwest, strengthening into a depression, then to a deep depression, and eventually evolving into a cyclonic storm. The IMD bulletin predicts this transformation taking place over the southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal by October 25, escalating to a cyclonic storm by October 27.
The current weather system has led to heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, with Pallipattu recording the highest at 15 cm. The rainfall pattern is expected to continue, with light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall anticipated in various districts, including Cuddalore and Puducherry. Temperatures in Chennai and surrounding areas are set to remain at a calm 24-29°C, with periodic showers forecasted.
