US President Donald Trump on Tuesday called for the release of eight women facing prosecution in Iran as potential Islamabad talks loom. He publicized the issue via social media, bringing attention to six women and two teenage girls who human rights groups say were arrested during anti-government protests earlier this year.
Among them, Bita Hemmati has been sentenced to death, while Mahboubeh Shabani faces similar charges deemed punishable by death. Two 16-year-old girls, Diana Taher Abadi and Ghazal Ghalandari, were also detained in separate incidents. Additional arrests include Venus Hossein Nejad from the Bahai faith, accused of protest organization, and Golnar Naraqi, an emergency physician detained in Tehran.
Iran's judiciary, however, refutes Trump's allegations. State media claims some women have been released and, if others are convicted, they would face prison rather than execution. The ongoing narrative reveals a complex and contentious diplomatic issue, as human rights organizations warn of grave consequences for those involved.
