K C Venugopal, a senior Congress leader, has filed a privilege notice against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging serious breaches of parliamentary privilege following Modi's address to the nation. The Prime Minister's speech was deemed critical of opposition parties after their role in the defeat of a proposed women's reservation bill.
The notice, addressed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, claims that Modi's remarks undermined the authority of Parliament by casting unwarranted aspersions on Members of Parliament, especially concerning their voting behavior. Venugopal stated that this not only constitutes contempt of the House but threatens the democratic rights of the Indian populace.
Further, Venugopal urged the Speaker to initiate a comprehensive inquiry into the incident, asserting the need to preserve the integrity and authority of Parliament. He claimed that the Prime Minister's actions were both unethical and a blatant abuse of power, calling for a decisive stand to prevent future occurrences.
