In a heated development within the Rajya Sabha on Friday, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien sharply criticized the swift appointment of Harivansh as the Deputy Chairman. This appointment is notable as Harivansh becomes the first nominated MP to hold this position in the Upper House.
While Harivansh's election was uncontested, O'Brien raised concerns over the lack of a deputy speaker in the Lok Sabha for the past seven years. The timing of the appointment, during a special three-day session amid state assembly elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, has raised eyebrows.
Members of the TMC and the Samajwadi Party staged a walkout in protest as the resolution for Harivansh's election was presented. Despite the controversy, significant figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge extended their congratulations to Harivansh.
