Controversy Over Swift Appointment of Deputy Chairman in Rajya Sabha
Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien raised concerns about the expedited appointment of Harivansh as deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha, noting the absence of a deputy speaker in Lok Sabha for seven years. Harivansh, a nominated MP and former journalist, was elected unopposed amid ongoing assembly polls in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

On Friday, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien questioned the urgency behind appointing Harivansh as deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha, emphasizing the lack of a deputy speaker in Lok Sabha for the past seven years.
The inquiry arose after TMC and SP MPs walked out of the Rajya Sabha, protesting the election of Harivansh, a nominated MP and former journalist. Notably, this marks the first instance of a nominated MP becoming the deputy chairman of the Upper House.
Despite concerns, Harivansh was elected unopposed, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge offering their congratulations. The position had been vacant since April 9, when Harivansh's previous term concluded.
